Drifting through mountains at dawn

I awoke from an intermittent sleep as soon as dawn broke. We had entered Bulgaria only an hour previously and now the Express was charging through the Rhodope Mountains in the south.
With a practically empty carriage, I spent all my time at either my window or the one in the corridor outside my door, flitting from side to side to ascertain the best view. The mountains were delightful and it was blissfully peaceful, save for the noise of the train.
